Incentivisation

Continuing from my last post… Frederick Taylor and Frederick Maslow’s works opened the door to incentivising workers and using pay as a motivational factor.
Since Enron, Tyco, Worldcom and the whole ensuing mess of corporate scandals came about at the turn of the Century, bonuses, (both their size and make-up,) have been attracting growing interest. Today, after Banks and bankers became the latest group to have their bonus pay scrutinized, the assumption has become, by default, that bonus pay in the form of cash or cash equivalents leads to risk taking and harms the long term prospects of the employer.

Frederick & Frederick

Born in 1856, Frederick Winslow Taylor was probably one of the biggest innovators of the 20th Century, whose defining work “The principles of scientific management” radically changed management’s perception of work and how it can impact on the success of the business. From his maiden work the efficiency movement was born.
Taylor’s work set the groundwork for his namesake, Frederick Irving Herzberg. A psychologist born in 1923, most politicians today probably wished that he would never have published his work on job enrichment and the motivator-hygiene theory, as he opened Pandora’s Box by linking pay to motivation.

Sacred Cows

I read a very interesting article in the “In Business” journal published by the Cass Business School. Written by Richard Tyler the Enterprise Editor for the British newspaper the Daily Telegraph, he seeks to try and persuade us that the gigantic bonuses paid out to city bankers is actually a good thing, and that it contributes positively towards society.
